I never used to be a runner. I was actually far from it. I never enjoyed it when we were “forced” to do the mile in P.E. The mile! Ha, that makes me laugh now! I always got winded really easily, or my side would cramp up, or it would be too hot or too windy or too cold- always an excuse. Always a reason not to run. But then I decided I wanted to be a runner. I saw all of these people I really look up to and admire, running. And I thought, you know what, I can do that! So I downloaded the couch to 5k program, and along with Zack, we completed it and ran our very first 5k! And just like that, I’m a runner. But I’ve already talked about that. Today I want to focus on the reasons why I run.
I run for exercise. I run because it feels good to get the oxygen flowing through my body. I run because it’s good for my lungs. I run because it’s good for my health. I run because of the feeling I get when I’m completing something I’ve never done before. That feeling of accomplishing a goal- there’s nothing like it. I run because it makes me happy. Endorphins are no joke! I run because it clears my mind. If I’m having a bad day, I throw on my shoes and get out there and hit the pavement. It doesn’t force me to think about anything. I run because I feel closer to God when I do. I run because it makes me feel alive. Running is therapeutic to me and something I am very passionate about. As a new mom, it’s a chance for me to carve out some “me time” and get outside and stay active. Plus, it’s something I can do with Sam in tow, which is that much better! I run because I’ve seen what it’s like to not be able to run, let alone walk, and as long as I’m able to, I will continue to run. Because I can. I run because I don’t dread it anymore- I actually love it now! And that is the coolest thing ever. Whoulda thunk? ;)
And as we all know, the next best thing to the emotional connection that we have to running, is the cute outfits we get to wear! ;) I’ve said it time and time again- a good outfit is sometimes the best motivation, when you just can’t seem to get your head in it. And I have found that Zappos has an awesome selection of workout gear! I’ve already made a few purchases lately, and they’ve given me that boost that I need to keep going. The best part of Zappos is that they have fast and FREE shipping (the best!) and a free 365 day return policy. Hello! So if you are worried something might not fit right, no worries- you can always return it for free! Love that so much, especially with online shopping. Thumbs up from me. Also, Zappos is sponsoring the Bay to Breakers tomorrow in SF! I have some friends who are running in it, and I won’t be, but I will be rooting them on! It’s definitely a goal to run in it!
So I want to know: Why do you run?

I’ve always struggled with running. I hate it…but I want to love it! I’m gonna try the Couch to 5K thing again and see if I can make it stick. I feel pretty great during the run and I feel really great after the run…right now it’s just starting the run that’s hard, haha. You’ve inspired me to give it a go, again. :)
Katie
Girl, I was the exact same way! We actually started doing Couch to 5k a year ago and just…. stopped. So then when we did it this year we were more determined to see it through- and I’m SO glad we did! It is worth it! :) I totally get the motivation part being the hardest! You can do this!!

Running is my passion, it is the one constant in my life no matter what as crazy as that sounds. Even when Kyle is away for work I can still run and no one can take it from me. My running journey these last two years has been pretty amazing.
Katie
Jen, I love that SO MUCH. It sounds like it really has been amazing- you always inspire me with your running/marathon posts!

I have to say I love running, but I’m not really a great one. I get shin splints, foot pain, hip pain, etc from running, but there’s something about running that keeps me doing it, even with the discomforts. Maybe it’s like you said, it makes me feel alive. It definitely relieves all my stress, it’s a time for meditation, and clears my mind. I’m 9 months pregnant and still running; although currently I’m running to help get my baby out…little guy is a little late LOL!
Katie
Wow, good for you for not letting all of that pain and nonsense get in your way- you are one tough cookie!!! :) And for running at 9 months pregnant! My goal is definitely to keep running when I’m pregnant again, too! You are so inspiring! Now, come on, baby!! ;)

I run because it’s a chance to let my mind free. I love that I can just put my shoes on and go outside. Plus, my dog Mochi is the best running buddy!

I keep telling myself that I just need to get out there and start running. Every runner friend that I have absolutely loves it, but the thought of the stomach cramps and the struggle to breathe stops me every single time I think I will give it a try.

I love this post :) Running has always been special to me, and even more so since having my baby girl. It makes me feel like me again. We just went out for our first family run last night with baby girl in the jogging stroller – we all loved it.

Like you, I used to dread the mile testing in gym class. I would have severe panic attacks, cold sweats, the whole nine yards. I felt like everyone was judging me as I ran because I was overweight and would look ridiculous. After I had my daughter I was extremely unhappy with my body/ health and I needed a change. I joined a mommy and me work out class and the first class had us doing sprints. I thought I was going to die. I went back everyday… I’ve been going for 4 years now with both my kids. The women there motivated me and made me feel good about myself no matter what size I was at. With their support, i signed up for my first 5k 3 years ago, never told my husband or family, ran that 5k, went home, and never felt more proud of myself. Since then I’ve run countless 5ks, done a triathlon, and continue to run everyday. Running is now my favorite exercise. I love setting a healthy example for my children who also love running with us ( short distances of course lol).
