I was having a pretty crappy day last week. We’re going through the dreaded 4 month sleep regression- the one that everyone talks about and that I was crossing my fingers to avoid. Nope. Didn’t avoid. We are right in the thick of it actually. And so lack of sleep and feeling sorry for myself equated to my being in all sorts of a funky funk. I hadn’t worked out that day either, and so as I was sitting there I thought to myself, “Self, you should work out.” And so I did. And wouldn’t you know, that funk was turned right around! I felt more energized and much happier once I completed that workout! So. I believe in the power of a good workout, I really do. And the next time you’re in a funk, I highly suggest you get a good sweat in! You might be surprised at how much better you feel afterward.
A favorite breakfast of mine recently has been fresh fruit with greek yogurt and a side of flaxseed toast with peanut butter. We bought a cantaloupe and I literally cannot get enough of it. Also, grapes. I can’t stop eating all of the grapes. I’m really weird with my fruit, and I go in waves of being OBSESSED-OMG-I-MUST-EAT-IT-ALL-OF-THE-TIME with various fruits. Right now? It’s grapes. They’re just SO GOOD. And I froze them for the first time, after having heard everyone tell me how good frozen grapes are and yeah. Everyone is right. Frozen grapes are the bomb.com. Do it.
Speaking of yummy breakfast, have you heard of Love Grown foods? I was recently sent a few of their products to sample, and ohhh em geeee, LOVE! Don’t freak out, but their cereal is made out of, wait for it…. beans! Yes, beans, as in lentils and garbanzo beans and navy beans. Yeah, I know. It’s kinda weird, but honestly, it tastes good! And plus, it’s super good for you, since you know, it’s made out of beans and all. I also am a big fan of their oatmeal and granola. But I’m a big fan of all oatmeal and granola, so it wasn’t too hard to win me over in that respect. ;)
What did you have for breakfast this morning?
What are some ways you get yourself out of a funk?

And that is the reason I have to workout every morning :) or I get into a funk the rest of the day. Except rest days, I don’t get into a funk. That’s made out of beans??? That’s so interesting!! I’m not a fan of beans at all { I actually kind of hate them haha }, so I’m interested if I would like those. Have a great Thursday :)
Katie
Amen, sister. Working out every morning is like the key to happiness, I’m convinced of it! ;) And yeah, the bean thing threw me off, but you can’t taste them!

I have never heard of Love Grown Foods but it sure looks good. I usually don’t eat oatmeal for breakfast. Mine usually consists of eggs and an English muffin.

Okay, I MUST try these breakfast foods!! SO intrigued! I had oatmeal for breakfast this morning. I usually have a green smoothie, but we were out of bananas.

Oh man, I can totally relate to those “funk” feelings. I notice they happen more when I’m tired too. I’m sorry you’re going through that terrible 4 month sleep regression. Just remember, “This too shall pass!” I’m so glad a workout helped! It always helps me too. :) I was in a little bit of a funk on Monday. I have no idea why other than maybe some post vacation blues? Thankfully I had a BodyPump class to teach midday and it TOTALLY turned my spirits around! Those endorphins are pretty amazing. Sending you hugs!!! Please feel free to email me if you ever need some encouragement. I know that mommy business can be tiring at times!! xo

You just reminded me that I have a few sample boxes of that cereal to try! Need to get on that, seeing as I’m completely -ob.SESSED- with all things cereal right now. And I can definitely relate to using exercise to get me out of a funk. Nothing like getting the blood pumping (I just wrote pumpkin) and endorphins flowing :)

How have I not had frozen grapes yet??? I need to try them asap. I was feeling really stressed out on Monday after my first day at my new job but I went straight to workout and I felt so much better after :)
Jamie
Frozen grapes are seriously the best snack ever. They’re sooo good.
Whitney
I’ve had their oatmeal before and it’s super tasty! Working out is totally a great way to get out of a funk! I never want to workout, but I feel so much better once I do. It’s the making yourself actually do it that’s the hardest part. Hope you get some sleep soon!
Ericka
I totally agree that a good workout can get you out of a funk and put you in a better mood! It’s amazing how much better I feel after a nice run when I had a rough day at work.

Exercise and some good food always does the trick for me!

Oh gosh, sleep deprivation is the worst (I’m definitely feeling it right now). Hopefully, things turn around for you soon!

New mom question in dealing with little sleep…as a breastfeeding mom of a newborn, at what point did you stop waking him throughout the night to nurse?
Kylie
Hey Katie:)
I’ve always loved your blog and also enjoy all of your feelings and tips on being a new mom. I remembered reading this post a while ago and went searching for it since my husband and I are in the thick of the 4 month sleep regression. Being a breastfeeding mommy too, I was wondering if you had any tips that you could share with me on this emotionally draining subject. My daughter has always been an amazing sleeper and now I feel like I’m failing.
