It was a day that I dread every year since my mom passed- her birthday. It’s just not the same waking up and not picking up the phone and wishing her a happy birthday. Birthdays lose all of their luster once the person you are celebrating is no longer here. But this year was special.
For my mom’s birthday, we brought Sam to her grave for the first time. He brought some joy, that’s for sure. We sat by my mama’s grave for quite a while, soaking in the beautiful day and remembering her. We played one of her favorite songs, “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol (I know, she had impeccable taste), and had a little birthday party for her, right there in the grass. It was perfect. Sam was so well-behaved, and just sat there with me- I think he knew that’s what I needed the most. We miss you, Mom.

So beautiful. My Grandmother passed away when my Mum was only 9 years old and to this day my Mum lights a single candle for her on her birthday and blows it out. I don’t know what she wishes for but I know that it has become a special moment between her and her Mother.

Very sweet Katie. My stepdad passed away last month and for a week straight I’d curl up on my bed bawling while listening to Chasing Cars. It still makes me cry every time. His birthday was earlier this month as well. Stay strong <3
